What will I be doing?
Guilford College has partnered with Atlantis Global, which provides AAMC-compliant physician shadowing in international settings, to offer a Spring 2023 three-week course: Medical Shadowing in Spain. Students will have the opportunity to experience global healthcare by shadowing doctors in a different specialty each week in a hospital setting for at least 20 hours per week. Students will gain extensive observation experience in a hospital setting, a broadened perspective on the medical vocation, and a comparative lens to examine healthcare in a different culture.

Over the course of the 3-week session, students will shadow physicians four days per week (a min. of five hours daily),  from early morning to early afternoon. Shadowing specialties will vary and students typically shadow in pairs. Though students can request specialties of interest, specific departments are not guaranteed, as departmental availability depends on the doctors’ schedules.

In addition to shadowing, students will have the opportunity to give back to their community by teaching English to medical professionals or volunteering in other capacities at the hospital for 3-5 hours per week.

Each Friday is reserved for a group cultural outing. Past excursions have included hikes, visits to local museums, sporting events, boat tours, beach trips, kayaking and even taking the train to explore a nearby city. Each excursion includes transportation and one group lunch or dinner.

Who should go?
This experience is perfect for students at any level who are considering a career in health care, as a physician, physician assistant, or nurse as well as those interested in physical therapy and public health. It will also be of interest to students interested in physiology, developmental biology, exercise science, medical diagnostics, microbiology, neuroscience, and other allied health fields  For juniors and seniors, the course can fulfill the internship requirement for the Health Science, Exercise and Sports Science and Public Health majors (HSCI 390, SPST 390 or PBH 390).  Students who are biology majors (and not taking the course to fulfill one of the internship requirements) can count the course as their Biology capstone experience.  Or it can just be a great elective and credits toward graduation!  This is a great opportunity for students to travel abroad, get clinical shadowing experience, and see a different health care system than the one in the US.

Program Experience Video
"….the advice I would give to anyone participating in the program in the future—always ask questions. The doctors are all very eager to teach and help you in their areas of expertise and you’ll both get so much more out of the experience if you just ask them about areas you’re confused about, interested in, or even just about the doctors to connect with them." - (Katie Ben-Judah, ’23 Forensic Biology and Health Science)

"Make sure you immerse yourself in the Spanish culture. Don’t waste this amazing opportunity to allow for your medical mind to grow as well as your usual “homebody” ways," (Jason Foulks, '22 Biology and Health Science)

"Each department is going to be a completely different experience from the last, make all of your moments in your assigned department count! Try as hard as you can to not let there be a language barrier and ask questions when you are confused! All the doctors, nurses, technicians, etc. are very kind and knowledgeable. They want you to succeed as well." (Madyson Schreiber '22 Biology and Health Science)

Where will I be doing this?
City TBD in Spain

Do I have to speak Spanish?
No, you are not required to speak Spanish.  Many students who have participated in medical shadowing through Atlantis do not speak the language of the host country.  All the doctors speak English and are eager to work with students. You will also have an opportunity to work with the doctors and other health care professionals in Teruel teaching English.  That being said, this is an incredible opportunity to gain or improve Spanish language skills, which are incredibly important for healthcare practitioners in the US.
