Sports Studies: International Model of Sport
This course provides a first-hand, culturally-diverse experience that will inform students of the
rapidly globalized nature of the sports industry, while also giving them an opportunity to examine
both the similarities and differences between the European Model of Sport and our own domestic
approach. Through game day opportunities, interviews/lectures with sport leaders, tours of
culturally-significant sites, and traditional didactic study, students will gain a new perspective of the
sports industry, while also having an opportunity to build a network of global contacts.
Representatives of top international sport organizations will address a wide range of subjects/issues
throughout the trip. Topics will include the structure and characteristics of European sports,
marketing and management in European sports, sports law, sports medicine/performance, and
professional sporting around the world.

Number of Credits Offered: 4, Graded
Estimated Fee: $3,900
Includes transportation in countries,s all accommodations, course excursions, supplemental health insurance, official Guilford College transcript, and some meals (most accommodations include breakfast).
Not Included: international flight to Western Europe, some meals (mostly lunches and dinners on own), and personal spending money.
COVID Notice: All students traveling on this program must show proof of vaccination with a booster shot.
Course Notice: Sections of this course will be taught both before and after the abroad component online. Students are expected to complete materials, submit journal discussions, and submit assignments online through their Canvas page. Tentative Schedule: TBD - Note: students will be registered for the spring 2023 three-week course, however, the travel and bulk of your work will take place in mid-May.
